steep slope climbing

Postby davechiu » Tue Sep 08, 2009 2:08 pm

Dear all,

First of all, please forgive me for cross posting here and in the endless sphere. http://www.endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=12827&p=190381#p190381

I have a e-bike which is nicely built (and looks very nice too) Imagehttp://www.unikcycles.com/big_.asp?pid=155but has a relatively weak motor. just 250W on a 36V 10Ah battery. I want it to climb a 15degree slope. I know (now) that I asked too much of it. Even with hard pedaling, it can't make it. But if it can't make it up the slope, it is useless as that slope is the only road leading to the main road.

I want to know if there is any kit available that has enough torque? Or am I stuck with a e-bike only good for display?

Let me start off by saying that I have only been e-biking about six months. But I also live in a hilly area and have the 48v 500 watt Fusin gearmotor kit. So I may be able to give you some answers. The guys on endless sphere know more than me.
One thing that puts this kit above others is the 3 speed switch. These "gears" aren't really gears. It's all in the amazing controller. Some how it electronically changes the torque range of the motor. I have found that virtually no hill can stop the motor when it's in low. Actually only one hill in my area can really stop it(a mile or more of +15% with a turn) and that's only when I tow my trailer(50+lbs.). It doesn't limit power it simply changes torque range. I know this because I have a cycle anylst that gives me amp and watt readings. From what I understand a gear motor is better for climbing hills anyways. Plus you get a really cool headlight that would look good on your bike. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.
Here's a few pics. of the hills I climb with ease...

Hi welcome to our forums.

Your bike looks nice and it is good for city use(flat road), is it a geared freewheel motor? a 36v motor shouldn't feel "too weak", of course it is weak for a 15 degree slope, 15 degree slope is about 27%. Such a big slope will be difficult for any kind of motor if you wish to climb it purely by the motor, use a 48v motor and also use bike pedals will be the best choice.

You could contact our US dealer and ask them if they have any customer nearby you, maybe you could have a try at first. Our dealer is called Worldwide Electric Bikes LLC, in Georgia.

Thanks,

Unfortunately, I live in Hong Kong. There is no e-bike dealer here so I am very much on my own.

Kind people in Endless-Sphere suggested me to try a better controller first and see if the 250W motor can take the abuse or not. The battery is a 36V 10Ah one but I have no clue as to its C rating, so there are many possible weak links here, the controller, the motor and the battery, so it actually means the whole system

Yes, I think as a city-runner the bike in its original form is very good and looks very nice (all the wires are neatly hidden inside the frame, the battery is nicely packed in an Al casing etc etc) but it is useless if it cannot carry me.

Any chase that Fusin sells parts separately?

the listed specification of this bike really puzzeld us, its motor is 24v/250w and its battery is 36v/10ah?

Please let us know what components you need to update your bike, it would be better for you to make clear about your bike's specifications, motor / controller / battery , voltage, max continuous current the motor could take and the battery could discharge, this will be the first step of your bike updation.

Our 48v kit should meet your requirements, since U are in HK the express cost will be not so expensive, if you are interested you could write to me by louis@fusinmotors.com and we would be happy to send you an offer for a complete 48v kit with battery included or not included, up to your requirements.

Thanks,

Louis

Dear Louis,

36V battery 24V motor?! that's fundamental error, right? I have check and both the battery and motor should be 36V. It is made by a company calls Youe in Suzhou.

I don't know if it can take the abuse of something like 540W if the current is boost to 15A. I will try a higher Amp controller first. I know the battery C rating may also be a limiting factor.

I don't want to make big changes to the bike if I can as right now everything is kind of neat with all the bits and pieces well hidden inside the frame. But if the controller mod doesn't work out, I will turn to Fusin because people have a lot of good things to say about Fusin and your customer service is good. Shipping cost is also a big factor.

Thank you, Louis. Keep contact.
